The First Avenger: Captain America
Part of the reason I wanted to get discussion going again was some the news about this movie, which is starting to make me really skeptical.
I hope to goodness this isn't true:
Nothing against Krasinski--you gotta respect a man who's dating Emily Blunt--but this sounds terrible, and Johnston said they're looking for an unknown. Still, bad casting is nothing new with superhero films, so can't totally dismiss it...
I hope to goodness this isn't true:
-Coming SoonFox 411 is reporting that John Krasinski is getting closer and closer to landing the title role in Marvel Studios' The First Avenger: Captain America.
According to the site, "The Office" star has appeared in front of producers repeatedly since the start of the new year and since rumors began in February:
"John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests," their source says. "He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week."
The source added: "The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads. They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else."

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
so far i've liked all of marvel's casting choices . . . but i'm not sold on krasinski as cap (but can totally see him as a pre-super-soldier steve rogers). i recently watched "away we go" hoping to see him break out of the jim character from "the office" and do something more dramatic, but i was so disappointed w/ his performance. well, the whole film disappointed me (can't believe dave eggars wrote that banal, predictable script). but krasinski especially seemed, i don't know, wrong for film. i kept thinking, 'it's jim from 'the office' trying to not act like jim from 'the office.'
but i'll wait and see before i whine too much. might see him in cap's outfit and hopefully jim will disappear.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
Give him some training with 87eleven, a cool costume, and let him be a shield fighting master.
Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
Glad to hear that it's debunked
He's a funny guy, but I don't WANT a funny guy to play Cap

I was kinda hoping for the guy who played the main Nazi in Inglorious Basterds
Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
I have to say, I'm a bit worried about the casting at this point. Marvel has done pretty good so far, but not casting the right guy could sink this film, if not the whole Marvel Universe franchise.
Honestly, they should cast Chris Evans at this point. He may have already played Johnny Storm, but he has the charisma that you need for the part. And if he wants the role, let him have it.

They should have Chris Evans for the android Torch.

Sounds like they might!

Chris Evans Confirmed for Captain America
Source: Heat Vision, Variety March 22, 2010
Chris Evans ("Fantastic Four" films) has accepted Marvel Studios' offer for him to play Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Joe Johnston-directed The First Avenger: Captain America. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the script.
Marvel would not comment on the development, but we expect the official announcement will be made soon.
The deal calls for Evans to star in at least three "Captain America" movies, with the first hitting theaters on July 22, 2011.
He would reprise the role in The Avengers, which will united Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton) in one film. That film is scheduled for May 4, 2012. The character also will likely make cameo appearances in Marvel's other films.
Hugo Weaving will play the villain Red Skull in The First Avenger: Captain America

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
I haven't seen him in anything since FF, but his turns in Sunshine and Push seem to have won several folks over. Still weird to me that they couldn't choose anyone who hadn't starred as another Marvel character, but we'll see. He's not the exact model, but definitely in the ballpark, so that's cool.
I will say that I liked his performance as Torch, he was just too old. But that wasn't his fault.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
Given how jacked up Ryan reynolds got to play Hal Jordan, I think once Evans goes through the "fitness treatment" deal (or whatever they are calling the steroid bulk up deal now), he will look much more like Cap. I'm happy he took the deal, I'm confident he will do great.

Are these concepts? I don't know. These are kinda so so.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
It's concept art, but it's the real deal, released by Marvel.
The good: I like the texturing overall. Nice treatment of the cowl, chinstrap and headgear overall--the slight contour in the back is really cool.
The boots are laced, which I don't love, but the cuffs at the top are a nice way to reference the buccaneer boots Cap traditionally wears.
I love the blue overall. It's dimmer than the comics but I actually think that's a good idea.
Like the fact that he can turn his head. Would love it if they rotoed out the seam, but oh well.
Some folks hate the suspenders but they don't bother me as much. I'm okay with the utility belt, even.
The shield is perfect.
The bad:
No wings on the helmet is a complete fail. It doesn't look right. This is inexcusable.
Why is there any brown at all? It looks horrible. Red, white, blue, and brown.
Don't care for the stars on the shoulders; feels like overkill.
Cap is sporting a hip holster. If Cap pulls a gun in this film...that's not the character I'm familiar with. At all.
I don't know what to make of this. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is fantastic. Arnim Zola, another classic Cap villain has been cast. The Howling Commandos are in. But I don't like the way they're handling Cap.
Green Lantern and Thor are rising in stock for me; this is dwindling.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
I’m curious to see the first real pix of Cap. It this point I really don’t care for this costume. It’s not a deal breaker but I’m just not impressed. I agree the shield is great. Hard to mess that up.

Casting updates
Stanley Tucci has now been confirmed for the role of Dr. Abraham Erskine, the man who administers the super-soldier serum to Cap.
Neal McDonough has been confirmed for the role of Dum Dum Dugan. This interview seems to confirm that Fury and the Howling Commandos do show up in the WWII portion of the film.
Tommy Lee Jones has signed on as well.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America
No wings on the helmet, no red boots or gloves, outfit doesn't look like it fits well and he's holding a gun. Why even bother calling him Captain America?
Disappointing, particularly because the atmosphere in the painting is perfect.
